Women's golf team strengthens hold of second place in standings

Led by co-medalist Leleaga Meredith, the Irvine Valley women's golf team picked up seven wins in an Orange Empire Conference match at El Prado in Chino on Monday.

The match was hosted by Mt. SAC.

The Lasers only loss was to conference-leading and undefeated on the year College of the Desert.

Irvine Valley solidified its hold on second-place with the seven victories and improved its record to 39-9 in conference.

The Lasers lead Fullerton by four matches for second place.

Meredith finished with a score of 5 over par 77 to share medalist honors with College of the Desert's Fumika Matsumoto.

Meredith was in the running to take medalist honors by herself on Monday.

But IVC coach Ben Burnett said that ball Meredith's ball was mistakenly picked up by a course worker after she hit a tee shot down the middle on the par 5 14th hole.

The ball couldn't be located so Meredith had to return to the tee and play the first tee shot as a lost ball.

Sophomore Cindy Dang shot 85, freshman Rebecca Peng carded 88 and freshman Liliana Gutierrez came in at 89 to round out the scorers for Irvine Valley.

The team travels to El Cajon on Wednesday for a conference match on the Sycuan Golf Course.
