Irvine Valley's women's golf team showed it is among the top teams in the state by finishing fifth in the loaded Morro Bay Invitational at Morro Bay Golf Course that finished on Monday.
Morro Bay Golf Course will be used for this seasons CCCAA State Championships event.
College of the Desert, which is undefeated on the season, won the two-day event that took place Sunday and Monday with a team score of 642.
Sierra from Northern California was second with a score of 655.
College of the Canyons came in third at 662.
Modesto, also from Northern California, was fourth at 665.
Irvine Valley came in fifth at 675 - one shot in front of Canada, which was sixth at 676.
Seventeen teams took part in the tournament at Morro Bay.
"Most holes are either uphill or downhill there," IVC coach Ben Burnett said. "The greens were sloped and fast. Downhill putts were difficult to stop and required playing much larger breaks than the ladies have experienced prior to playing in this invitational tournament. Local knowledge means a lot."
Irvine Valley was in fourth after the first day with a four-play team total of 331. IVC shot 344 on the second day.
IVC was paced by sophomore standout Leleaga Meredith, who shot 152. She scored 79 on the first day and an impressive 73, which tied for the lowest round in the tournament, on the second day.
She tied for fourth individually in the tournament behind Sierra's April Chang and Butte's Ana Bonilla (both 147) and Desert's Fumika Masumoto (148).
Meredith, who finished third at the state championships last season, used four birdies, 10 pars, three bogeys and one double bogey to post the 1 over par score of 73.
"Her double bogey was on the final hole," Burnett said. "Her pitch shot rolled farther beyond the hole than intended. She rimmed out her downhill second putt and took three putts on the final hole. Unfortunately, it boosted her score from below par to 1 over par."
Freshman Rebecca Peng was next for the Lasres with a score of 163 (74 and 89). She chipped in twice on the first day of the tournament. Her opening round included four birdies, nine pars, four bogeys and a double bogey for a 2 over par score of 74.
Peng came in 16th as an individual.
Sophomore Cindy Dang came in at 167 (84 and 83) and freshman Rachel Watson shot 193 (94 and 99) to round out IVC's scoring players.
Freshmen Liliana Gutierrez (99 and 99) and Stuti Mandal (101 and 97) each carded 198 for IVC.
