Meredith shines as women's golf team finishes third in tourney

Irvine Valley sophomore women's golfer Leleaga Meredith sizzled, finishing third individually at the South Coast Invitational in Ventura.

The tournament was played Sunday and Monday.

Meredith, who finished third at the CCCAA State Championships last season, was just two shots off the overall lead.

Meredith shot a two-day total of 147.

The IVC standout was incredible on the second day of the event at Buena Ventura Golf Course. She set a tournament record with a score of 67.

Meredith had four birdies, 13 pars and one bogey for her 67.

Meredith shot 80 on the first day of the tournament at Olivas Links Golf Course.

Her effort helped lead the Lasers to a third-place finish overall in the event. Nine teams participated.

College of the Desert won with a score of 615.

College of the Canyons was second at 649 and Irvine Valley was just one shot back of Canyons at 650. Rounding out the top five teams were Santa Barbara City at 681 and Palomar at 682.

Freshman Rebecca Peng also had a nice tournament for the Lasers. She finished tied for sixth individually with a score of 158. Peng shot 81 on the first day and 77 on the second day.

Freshman Liliana Gutierrez shot 170 (89 and 81) and Rachel Watson rounded out Irvine Valley's scorers with a 175 (91 and 84).

Irvine Valley returns to the links on Wednesday when it travels to Soboba for an Orange Empire Conference match hosted by Mt. San Jacinto.
