Women's golf team starts season at Desert Classic

Irvine Valley's women's golf team opened its 2014 season at the Desert Classic Invitational last weekend at Indian Canyons Golf Club.

The Lasers, who were missing two players, finished 10th with a total score of 696.

College of the Desert won the 11-team tournament at 598 with Sierra second at 620 and Sacramento City in third at 648.

Irvine Valley was paced by sophomore Leleaga Meredith, who came in with a score of 155.

She finished in a tie for 12th individually.

Meredith placed third individual at the CCCAA State Championships last season.

Freshman Rebecca Peng was next for Irvine Valley at the Desert Classic with a score of 160. Peng placed tied for 18th overall.

Freshman Liliana Gutierrez shot 190 and freshman Stuti Mandal carded a 191 for IVC.

IVC coach Ben Burnett is still enthusiastic about his team's chances this season, especially with a full team, which he plans to have in future matches.

"I am pretty excited about the possibility of this being a successful season for our team," Burnett said. "Our two returners (sophomores Meredith and Cindy Dang) are solid.  The four new girls have shown good potential and appear to be very coachable."
Irvine Valley will play again on Wednesday. The Lasers take part in their first Orange Empire Conference match of the season. College of the Desert will host at Woodhaven Country Club.
