Women's basketball team celebrates sophomores with victory

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team honored its sophomores and their families and loved ones Thursday night at home against Cypress.

The Lasers celebrated five sophs before an Orange Empire Conference game against Cypress.

Irvine Valley played well throughout and defeated Cypress, 65-49.

IVC, ranked No. 12 in the state, improved its record to 19-7 overall and 10-2 in conference with the win. Cypress went to 10-16 overall and 6-6 in the OEC.

The Lasers got off to a solid start and led, 19-11, after the first quarter and then, 34-21, at the half.

They held on through the second half for the 16-point victory.

Irvine Valley sophomore wing Christen Ziska and freshman point guard Haruka Mikuma each finished with 19 points.

Sophomore post player Makena Tomlinson ended with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Sophomore forward Ella Will chipped in six points and three rebounds.

Irvine Valley sophomores Emily Freeman, Ziska, Tomlinson, Daphne Rudis and Will were celebrated before the game.

Irvine Valley shot 42.3 percent (22-52) from the field as a team in the contest.

It was IVC's final home game of the season.

The Lasers play again next Wednesday at Saddleback at 6 p.m. and then finish the regular season with a game at Riverside next Friday.
