Haruka Mikuma breaks school record for assists in a game

In the Irvine Valley women's basketball team's impressive 95-51 Orange Empire Conference win last week over Riverside included an impressive new school record for assists in a game.

Freshman point guard Haruka Mikuma finished with an amazing 17 assists in the victory.

The total broke the previous high of 13 by Phouangmaly "Pong" Pravongviengkham during the 1998-99 season. IVC made the state tournament that year for the first time behind Pong. She was named the conferene player of the year.

What made the feat incredible by Mikuma, a freshman out of Irvine High, is that she didn't even play in the fourth quarter in recording the 17 assists.

She finished with eight assists alone in the third period when IVC out-scored Riverside, 33-5, to put the game away.

Mikuma has started every game for the Lasers this season and is averaging 4.7 points and 4.1 assists per game.

Irvine Valley, ranked No. 12 in the state, has a record of 16-7 overall and 7-2 in conference.

It sits second in OEC and plays again on Friday at Golden West at 6 p.m.
