
The Irvine Valley women's basketball team captured its 15th win of the season Wednesday night at home.
After a close first quarter, IVC out-scored the Tigers, 25-11, in the second and then, 33-5, in the third period on its way to a 95-51 Orange Empire Conference victory.
The Lasers, ranked No. 12 in the state, improved their record to 15-6 overall and 6-1 in the OEC. IVC stays a game behind first-place Orange Coast.
Irvine Valley plays at Orange Coast on Friday.
Riverside went to 11-9 overall and 4-3 in conference
The story of the night was Irvine Valley freshman point guard Haruka Mikuma finishing with 17 assists. The assist total set a program record for a game.
She had eight assists alone when Irvine Valley when on its big run in the third quarter.
Irvine Valley finished with 28 assists total on 37 made baskets.
The Lasers also made 19 three-pointers in the contest, going 19 of 41 (46.3 percent) from long range.
Freshman guard Moka Saiki led Irvine Valley with 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field and 4 of 7 from three-point range. She scored 13 of her 18 in the third quarter.
But the Lasers had four players score in double figures.
Sophomore wing Christen Ziska ended with 17 points, made five three-pointers and had five rebounds, sophomore guard Emily Freeman added 16 points with four three-pointers and three assists and sophomore post player finished with another double-double, contributing 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Irvine Valley shot 46.8 percent (37 of 79) from the field and out-rebounded Riverside, 46-40.
The Tigers were led by Janara Williams with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
