Women's basketball team hosts Cypress Wednesday night

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team will try for its fourth win in a row Wednesday night when it hosts Cypress at 6 p.m.

The game features two of the top-ranked teams in the state. Cypress was ranked No. 14 last week, while Irvine Valley came in at No. 20.

Cypress had its five-game win streak snapped with a 63-54 loss at No. 2 Orange Coast last Friday. The Chargers had their record fall to 14-5 overall and 2-1 in conference.

Ashley Hawkins finished with 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Chargers. Jasmine Uy added 14 points and five rebounds and Alexcia Alvarez chipped in nine points, six rebounds and four steals.

On the year, Hawkins ranks sixth in the state, averaging 23.0 points per game. She also averages 7.3 rebounds a game. Jaylene Oviedo averages 12.3 points and Alvarez is averaging 9.1 points per game for the Chargers

Irvine Valley defeated No. 15 Riverside, 74-56, at home last Friday to improve its record to 15-5 overall and 3-1 in conference.

The Lasers we once again led by freshman guard Trasara Alexander. She scored 25 points, added nine rebounds and had three assists.

Freshman guard Emily Freeman hit four three-pointers and contributed 14 points and sophomore post player Giselle Martinez had 13 points, seven rebounds and five blocks for the Lasers.

On the season, Alexander is averaging 13.9 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Sophomore guard Kennedy Pucci averages 8.4 points and 3.9 rebounds, Freeman is averaging 8.1 points and Martinez is averaging 7.9 points and 4.4 rebounds a game for the Lasers.

The Lasers play again on Friday at Fullerton at 6 p.m.
