Women's basketball team takes two games in a row in Ventura

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with two wins in Ventura over the last two days.

The Lasers held on for a 54-53 victory over Glendale on Thursday in a game in the VC-Optimist Club Holiday Classic.

Irvine Valley went into the game ranked No. 19 in the state and 10th in Southern California. Glendale was ranked No. 11 in So. Cal.

IVC was paced by freshman guard Emily Freeman, who had 13 points. She made three three-pointers.

Freshman wing Christen Ziska added 10 points and three steals and sophomore guard Kaila Truby and sophomore post player Giselle Martinez each had eight points. Martinez also contributed four rebounds.

The Lasers had an easier time on Friday in a 73-58 win over El Camino at Ventura.

A number of players had solid efforts in the win. Freeman finished with 15 points, freshman guard Trasara Alexander had 12 points, sophomore post player Giselle Martinez chipped in 10 points and freshman wing Ella Will added eight points.

With the two wins, Irvine Valley improved its record to 12-4 overall.

The Lasers play again next Wednesday at home, beginning Orange Empire Conference with a big-time game. The Lasers host No. 3 in the state and undefeated Orange Coast at 6 p.m.
