The Irvine Valley women's basketball team faced some of its toughest competition of the season over the weekend at the Moorpark College North-South Showcase.

The Lasers battled in each and every game, but dropped two of three contests.

They started with a 54-50 loss to San Joaquin Delta on Thursday. Delta was ranked No. 10 in the state and tied for sixth in Northern California.

IVC, ranked No. 16 in the state, outscored Delta, 18-8, in the third quarter to get back into the contest.

But Delta closed out the fourth quarter, 13-11, to hold on to the four-point win.

Freshman guard Trasara Alexander led IVC with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

IVC took on Redwoods on Friday and came away with a 51-34 victory.

It was the second-lowest points that Irvine Valley had given up in a game this season.

Freshman guards Emily Freeman and Christen Ziska each scored 12 points for Irvine Valley.

The Lasers closed out the event on Saturday against one of the top teams in the North.

Irvine Valley fell to Fresno City, 69-55. Fresno was ranked No. 5 in the state and third in No. Cal.

The defeat dropped IVC's record to 10-3 overall.

In the loss, Freeman paced the Lasers with 20 points. She went 7 of 12 from the field and 6 of 11 from three-point range.

Alexander added 11 points and five assists for IVC.

Irvine Valley plays again next Wednesday, taking on No. 1 in the state Palomar on the road at 6 p.m.
