IVC's Higgins and Matossian named to all-state basketball team

Irvine Valley women's basketball players Morgan Higgins and Sarah Matossian were named to the first team, all-state basketball team by the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association this week.

Higgins, a sophomore point guard, had already been named the Orange Empire Conference most valuable player and the offensive player of the year after she helped lead IVC to a record of 23-2 overall through the regular season and a perfect 12-0 in the OEC.

It was Irvine Valley's fourth-straight conference title.

Higgins has averaged 16.6 points with 3.5 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 3.8 steals per game overall.

In conference play, Higgins averaged 20.1 points-per-game and a 56.6 shooting percentage. She also averaged 4.1 assists and 3.5 steals in the OEC.

Matossian, a freshman forward, averaged 15.5 points, 11.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.6 steals per game through the regular season overall.

Matossian averaged 17.1 points and 12.1 rebounds, while shooting 56.4 percent from the field in conference play.

The Lasers, with their 80-43 win over Canyons in a So. Cal. region final Saturday night at home, advanced to the California Community College Athletic Association State Championship event.

Irvine Valley begins with a final 8 match-up against Butte at 1 p.m. on Thursday at West Hills Lemoore.
