Women's basketball team ready to host Cerritos in 2nd round

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team earned the No. 2 seed in the California Community College Athletics Association So. Cal. regional playoffs and will host No. 18 Cerritos on Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Spectators are welcome with social distancing and masks are required.

Ticket pricing is $12 (adults) and $8 (students and children). No conference passes will be accepted.

Parking is free next to the tennis courts.

Cerritos moved on to face the Lasers with a win over Rio Hondo in the first round.

In the Falcons' win over the No. 15-seeded Roadrunners, Cerritos limited its opponents to single-digit scoring through the first three quarters to open up a double-digit lead.

Cerritos' Ilani Avila led all scorers with 20 points and added four rebounds, while Brianna Flores checked in with nine points and seven rebounds. Therese Zekajj led all players with 15 rebounds to go with her six points and four steals, with Precious Yerena finishing with six points and six steals. 

The Lasers have a record of 23-2 overall, while Cerritos is 20-8.

Irvine Valley won its fourth straight Orange Empire Conference title.

Several players and coach Julie Hanks earned awards

Sophomore guard Morgan Higgins was named the OEC MVP, while freshman forward Sarah Matossian and sophomore guards Paola Roa and Jessica Suruor were named to the first team.
