Women's basketball team inches closer to perfect OEC season

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team moved within a game of a perfect Orange Empire Conference season.

The Lasers defeated Golden West, 88-45, on the road Monday afternoon in a make-up contest.

Irvine Valley, ranked No. 4 in the CCCSIA poll and No. 1 in the Southern California regional poll by the coaches, improved its record to 22-2 overall and 11-0 in conference.

IVC will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday, hosting Santa Ana at 7 p.m. It is sophomore night for the Lasers.

Fans are welcome with social distancing and masks are required.

Sophomore Paola Roa, who has been a star for the Lasers all season long, shined again. She had 25 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals. Roa shot 11 of 19 from the field.

Freshman forward Sarah Matossian just missed a triple-double for Irvine Valley, ending with 20 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. She added four steals and also had two blocks. 

Sophomore guard Jessica Suruor also had a great game for Irvine Valley. She finished with 16 points (3 of 5 from three-point range) and contributed three rebounds and three steals.

Irvine Valley also received important contributions from sophomore guard Katie Nguyen with eight points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals, freshman guard Kennedy Pucci with seven points and three rebounds and freshman forward Paea Tafea with six rebounds.

The Lasers shot 50.0 percent (37-74) from the field, out-rebounded Golden West, 49-31, and turned the Rustlers over 20 times.

It is sophomore night for IVC on Wednesday against Santa Ana. Fans are welcome with social distancing and masks are required.
