Women's basketball team closes out crossover with big win

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team was missing players, but didn't miss a beat over the last two days.

After a hard-fought 75-63 victory over Mt. San Jacinto on Friday in its first game in the IVC Crossover event, the Lasers used a strong second half to beat Cerritos, 72-43, on Saturday.

The Lasers were missing several players due to health and safety protocols.

Irvine Valley, who improved its record to 7-1 overall and have won five games in a row, led, 36-25, at the half.

But the Lasers out-scored the Falcons, 36-18, in the second half.

Sophomore guards Morgan Higgins and Jessica Suruor stood out for IVC.

Higgins finished with 20 points, five rebounds, nine assists and three steals and Suruor had 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. 

The duo also combined for seven of IVC's 11 made three-pointers on the night.

Freshman guard Andrea Garcia was anothere standout for the Lasers. She had a season-high 14 points, making the most of her 16 minutes off the bench, sinking four three-pointers.

irvine Valley freshman guard Aliya Richmond contributed six points and eight rebounds and fought for loose balls all night and freshman post player Giselle Martinez had six points and seven rebounds.

Freshman guard Kaila Truby chipped in four points, six rebounds, four assists and five steals for the Lasers.

IVC out-rebounded Cypress, 55-35, and had 22 assists on their 25 made baskets.

Cerritos was paced by Izabella Apodaca, who had 14 points and three steals.

Irvine Valley plays again in the LA Valley Tournament next weekend. The event goes next Friday through Sunday. Opponents and times will be updated early this week.
