Women's basketball team sets records in 2021-22 opening victory

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team started its 2021-22 season with a 129-18 win over Taft at home Friday night.

And it is easy to say that the Lasers set some records.

IVC recorded marks for largest margin of victory and least amount of points scored by an opposing team.

Irvine Valley led, 36-1, after the first quarter and, 57-8, at the half. 

The Lasers scored 36 points in the first quarter, 21 in the second quarter, 33 in the third quarter and 39 in the fourth quarter.

IVC shot 60.0 percent from the field in the game (54 of 90) and 43.3 percent from three-point range (13 of 30).

Irvine Valley turned Taft over 42 times and out-rebounded the Cougars, 61-21. IVC had 36 assists on its 54 made baskets.

Sophomore guard Morgan Higgins led the way for the Lasers with 24 points and six assists.

Freshman guard Paola Roa added 18 points and seven rebounds, freshman guard Rachel Gafford had 16 points and freshman forward Giselle Martinez finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Freshman guard Kaila Truby chipped in 11 points and six assists and freshman forward Sarah Matossian had eight points, 10 rebounds, four assists and six steals.

IVC plays again next Wednesday, hosting LA Trade Tech at 2 p.m.
