Women's basketball team goes to 7-0 with big win at El Camino

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team ran its record to 7-0 with a 62-40 win at El Camino on Friday night in a game between two of the top-ranked squads in Southern California.

The Lasers went into the game ranked No. 7 in the preseason poll with El Camino tied for 12th.

Irvine Valley led from start to finish. The Lasers scored the first seven points of the contest.

A three-pointer by freshman forward Kaitlyn Luu gave IVC a 7-0 lead with 8:07 left in the first quarter.

And Irvine Valley was up, 10-2, after a three-pointer by freshman guard Morgan Higgins.

IVC never looked back.

The Lasers were up, 17-12, at the end of the first quarter and, 28-23, at the end of the first half.

Irvine Valley played its best in the second half, out-scoring El Camino, 34-17.

The Lasers took their largest lead of 22 points with 1:03 left in the fourth quarter.

Irvine Valley was paced by sophomore wing player Anai Washington, who finished with 17 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Higgins had 14 points, seven assists and three steals and Luu ended up with 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Freshman guard Jessica Suruor chipped in nine points and four rebounds and freshman guard Gabby Samiy contributed seven points and four rebounds off the bench for IVC.

Irvine Valley plays its first home game of the season on Tuesday, hosting LA Valley at 3 p.m.
