Women's basketball team takes it to two more opponents

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team continued to be on top of its game this past week.

The Lasers routed two more opponents, beating host Saddleback, 69-40, on Thursday in the opener of the Saddleback Crossover.

Irvine Valley then defeated San Diego Mesa, 79-46, on Saturday to run its record to 4-0 on the season.

The Lasers were ranked No. 7 in Southern California in the opening California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association Poll of the year.

Against Saddleback, Irvine Valley held the Gauchos to just four points in the second quarter and led, 28-14, at the half.

IVC out-scored Saddleback by eight points in the third quarter to take full control of the game.

Sophomore wing Anai Washington had 15 points and five rebounds, sophomore guard Emma Vasquez came off the bench with nine points and sophomore post player Zoe Stachowski contributed eight points and 17 rebounds.

In all, 12 players score for the Lasers.

IVC turned around and took down San Diego Mesa on Saturday behind 16 points and seven rebounds from Stachowski. She is now averaging 15.8 points and 11.3 rebounds a game on the year.

Washington added 12 points and seven rebounds, freshman guard Morgan Higgins had 11 points and five assists and freshman forward Kaitlyn Luu scoed 10 points.

Irvine Valley led, 19-11, after the first quarter and was up, 44-24, at the half.

The Lasers play again next Friday against a tough Rio Hondo team on the road at 5 p.m.
