Women's basketball team takes consolation title at Ventura

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team dropped its first game in the Ventura College-Optimist Club Holiday Tournament, but bounced back with two wins to take the consolation title last week.

Irvine Valley started the tournament on Friday with a 43-29 loss to Mt. San Jacinto. The Lasers scored just 11 points in the first half and shot only 16.4 percent (10 of 61) as a team in the game.

But Irvine Valley responded with a tough, 79-73, win over Allan Hancock on Saturday and then beat Antelope Valley, 72-41, in the consolation final on Sunday.

Irvine Valley freshman Zoe Stachowski was named to the all-tournament team.

She finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds against Antelope Valley.

Freshman guards Megan Herrera and Anai Washington each added 15 points for IVC and sophomore forward Ryane Bradbury contributed nine points and nine rebounds.

In Irvine Valley's win over Allan Hancock a day earlier, the Lasers used a strong second half for the victory.

IVC trailed, 39-34, at the half, but out-scored the Bulldogs, 45-34, in the second half.

All five IVC starters scored in double figures with Stachowski having another strong game. She ended with 18 points and 22 rebounds. IVC out-rebounded Allan Hancock, 54-32, in the contest.

Sophomore guard Lexi Vail finished with a triple-double. She had 10 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists.

Washington finished with 19 points and six steals, Herrera had 17 points and four assists and Bradbury and chipped in 10 points and six assists.
