Irvine Valley sophomore star women's basketball player Kasey Smit has been named the Most Valuable Player of the Orange Empire Conference by the conference coaches.
Three other Irvine Valley players also earned all-conference honors and coach Julie Hanks was one of two coaches of the year after Irvine Valley shared the conference title with Cypress.
Hanks helped IVC finish the regular season with a record of 24-4 overall and were 13-1 in the conference.
They were ranked No. 10 in the final CCCSIA state poll of the regular season.
IVC won at Riverside, 82-79, in overtime last Thursday to earn a part of the OEC title.
And Smit cemented her conference MVP honors with an incredible 39 points and 23 rebounds in the win.
She was 16 of 28 from the field and 4 of 7 from three-point range.
With the 23 rebounds, Smit moved into first place in IVC program history with 366 rebounds in a season.
She went into the playoffs with 523 points in 2017-18, which ranked third in IVC history.
Heading into the playoffs last week, Smit was averaging 18.7 points, 13.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 2.1 steals and 2.1 blocks per game. She had 19 double-doubles on the year and was also shooting 47.8 percent from the floor..
She scored at least 20 points in all but two conference games
Smit was also named the CCCSIA female athlete of the month for January after finishing the month averaging 24.1 points, 14.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.9 steals and 1.9 blocks a game The Lasers went 9-0 in January.
Three other deserving IVC players earned all-conference honors.
Sophomore guard Elizabeth Garcia was named to the first team and freshman guard Lexi Vail and sophomore forward Kiara Warren were picked to the second team.
Garcia was averaging 10.6 points, 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals, Vail was averaging 10.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists and Warren averaged 10.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game.
Under Hanks' guidance, IVC led the conference in scoring, averaging 76.3 points per game, while also running an unselfish offense that ranked third in the state in assists per game (20.1).
