Women's basketball team looks to bounce back Tuesday night

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team is looking to bounce back after it suffered a tough 76-69 loss to Cypress last Friday night at home.

The Lasers had their 13-game win streak snapped.

IVC still has a record of 22-4 overall and is 11-1 in the Orange Empire Conference.

Irvine Valley, ranked No. 11 in the state, and No. 16 Cypress each have records of 11-1 in the OEC.

The Lasers were playing catchup all night last Friday.

Cypress scored the first 13 points of the game and was up 16-2 early on.

The Lasers climbed within three points at several different points throughout the contest, but could never get any closer.

IVC shot just 35.6 percent as a team in the game and only 27.5 percent in the second half.

The Lasers were also out-rebounded, 52-38, in the contest.

Sophomore forward Kasey Smit had 21 points, nine rebounds and four assists and sophomore guard Elizabeth Garcia finished with 17 points, four rebounds and four assists. Freshman guard Lexi Vail contributed nine points and seven assists.

On the season, Smit averages 17.8 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 2.2 steals and 2.1 blocks per game. Sophomore forward Kiara Warren averages 10.2 points and 6.0 rebounds, Garcia is averaging 10.2 points and 3.5 assists, Vail averages 9.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists and freshman guard Cydnie Danan averages 9.4 points and 3.5 assists for Irvine Valley.

Orange Coast is has a record of 3-20 overall and 2-10 in the Orange Empire Conference.

Orange Coast lost to Santa Ana, 75-69, last Friday night at home.

The Pirates led, 52-50, heading into the final quarter, but were out-scored 25-17 in the final period.

Sydney Driggs had 19 points and Aubriona Mathis finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds for Orange Coast.

It was coach Mike Thornton's final home game at OCC. The legendary coach is retiring at the end of this season after 29 years with the Pirates and more than 580 wins.

He led Coast to the 2003 State Championship.

On the season, Driggs is averaging 18.5 points and 4.5 rebounds, Mathis averages 14.7 points and 9.9 rebounds, Isabella Hollibaugh averages 9.3 points and 6.2 rebounds and Jenna Miramonez is averaging 9.2 points per game for Orange Coast.
