Women's basketball team ranked No. 9 in the state this week

After capturing its own tournament over the weekend, the Irvine Valley women's basketball team moved up in the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association State and regional poll this week.

The Lasers, who knocked off Long Beach City, 66-64, in the title game of the Irvine Valley Tournament last Saturday, have a record of 9-2 overall.

They moved up from 11th in the state poll to tied for ninth this week with the City College of San Francisco.

The top eight teams in the state poll are Palomar, Sequoias, Sierra, Mt. San Jacinto, Mt. San Antonio, Fresno City, Merced and East Los Angeles.

Irvine Valley is also now fourth in the South Region Poll. The Lasers moved up two spots from the last ranking.

Palomar, Mt. San Jacinto and Mt. San Antonio are the three teams ahead of IVC in the South Region Poll.

Irvine Valley's only two losses this season are to highly ranked teams. The Lasers fell to Sequoias, 57-54, in the semifinals of the Pasadena City Tournament on Nov. 10 and lost to Mt. San Jacinto, 78-70, in the opening round of a tournament at Saddleback.

Sequoias is 14-0 overall, ranked No. 1 in the North and second in the state. Mt. San Jacinto, as mentioned above, is 9-1 overall, No. 2 in the South and fourth in the state.

And the Lasers have wins over No. 14 in the state El Camino (twice) and No. 17 Long Beach City.

Irvine Valley gets a break from game action over the next two weeks. The Lasers don't play again until Dec. 28 when they open up the Ventura Tournament against No. 15 in the state LA Valley.
