The Irvine Valley women's basketball team picked up its second win in Orange Empire Conference play with a strong second half on Friday night at Santa Ana.
The Lasers out-scored the Dons, 49-32, in the second half to come away with a 70-63 victory.
The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 10-13 overall and 2-5 in conference, while Santa Ana dropped to 12-11 overall and 2-5 in conference.
It was the second time that Irvine Valley had beaten Santa Ana this season.
The Lasers trailed, 20-10, after the first quarter and were down, 31-21, at the half.
Santa Ana scored the first basket of the third quarter on a layup by Taylor Ivicevic to take a 33-21 lead.
And the Dons were ahead, 40-30 after another basket by Ivicevic with 3:41 left in the quarter.
But IVC closed out the quarter with a flurry. The Lasers pulled to within 42-39 on a basket by sophomore forward Kydell Pearson with 1:17 to play.
And after freshman forward Taylor Hall made a layup with five seconds left in the quarter IVC was down just a point at 45-44.
The Lasers took their first lead of the game on the first possession of the fourth quarter. Brown made a jumper to give IVC a 46-45 edge.
It was back and forth after that.
The game was tied at 48. 54, 56 and 58 before Irvine Valley took the lead for good.
Tied, 58-58, with 1:59 to play, Irvine Valley put up seven points in a row - all on made free throws.
Pearson buried two free throws and after freshman guard Elizabeth Garcia was fouled shooting a three pointer from the right side, she sank all three shots to make it a 63-58 with 58 seconds left in the game.
After a missed layup on the other end, Garcia was fouled and made two more free throws to put Irvine Valley up by seven points with 36 second to play.
The Dons didn't get closer than four points the rest of the way.
Garcia capped the game making two more free throws with a second left.
In all, Garcia went 10 of 11 from the line in the fourth quarter. She finished with a season-high 19 points and also added four rebounds and three steals.
Pearson led the Lasers in scoring, totaling 20 points. She also had 11 rebounds. Pearson was 10 of 12 from the free throw line as Irvine Valley went 29 of 33 from the charity stripe as a team.
Hall added 10 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocks, Brown had 10 points and four rebounds and sophomore guard Serena Saba finished with seven points, five rebound and five assists for the Lasers.
Santa Ana was paced by Amy Talavou, who finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. Angela Rodriguez came off the bench with 12 points for Santa Ana.
Irvine Valley plays again next Wednesday, hosting Saddleback at 7 p.m. in Presidents' Cup action between the two district rivals.
