Irvine Valley's women's basketball team was right with one of the top teams in the Orange Empire Conference for the first quarter last Friday night.

Cypress led Irvine Valley, 23-22, after the 10 minutes of action.

But it went downhill for IVC after that.

Cypress out-scored the Lasers, 19-2, in the second quarter and went on to a 74-59 win in an Orange Empire Conference game at Cypress.

Cypress, which was ranked No. 17 in the state and 11th in Southern California, improved its record to 15-5 overall and 3-0 in the conference. IVC, which dropped its third straight game, saw its record slip to 9-11 overall and 1-3 in conference.

IVC got 18 points from sophomore guard Aaleah Brown, 12 points and five rebounds from freshman forward Kiara Warren and 11 points, five rebounds and four steals from freshman guard Elizabeth Garcia.

The Lasers hurt themselves with 34 turnovers in the game. IVC turned the ball over 12 times in the deciding second quarter.

Alyssa Movchan led the Chargers with 15 points. Sylvia Garcia scored 11 points with seven rebounds and four assists and Joi Bertrand had seven blocks.

Irvine Valley plays again next Wednesday at Orange Coast at 5 p.m.
