Women's baksetball team handles Cerritos in consolation final

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team closed out the Erin Tomlinson Coast Christmas Classic with its second straight win.

The Lasers, who went 2-1 in the tourney, put together one of their better performances of the season in a 64-42 win over Cerritos in the consolation final at Orange Coast.

IVC got big games from sophomore forward Kydell Pearson and freshman forward Kiara Warren in the victory.

Pearson, who was named to the all-tournament team, finished with 19 points and seven rebounds.

She scored in double figures in all three of Irvine Valley's games in the event and averaged 14.7 points and 10.3 rebounds a game in the tournament.

Pearson lifted her season averages to 12.9 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.

Warren had another solid game with 15 points and 12 rebounds. She was 5 of 8 from the field and 5 of 7 from the free throw line.

Freshman guard Chasity Paopao added seven points and five rebounds and freshman guard Mary Dishoian and sophomore guard Aaleah Brown each added six points. Dishoian also had five rebounds.

IVC out-rebounded the Falcons, 55-32, and held Cerritos to under 30 percent shooting from the floor (18 of 62).

Irvine Valley led, 12-8, after the first quarter and, 35-23, at the half. The Lasers put the game away by outscoring Cerritos, 15-7, in the third quarter for a 50-30 lead.

The Lasers led by as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter before winning by 22.

Irvine Valley plays again on Dec. 28 in the Ventura Tournament. IVC opens with a 5 p.m. game against Antelope Valley.
