Women's basketball team scores big win in tourney opener

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team rolled to a 60-38 victory over Compton in the first round of the Irvine Valley Tournament on Thursday night.

The Lasers led basically from start to finish in moving on to the semifinals. IVC will take on El Camino in a semifinal on Friday at 7 p.m. The other semifinal features Long Beach City and Orange Coast at 5 p.m.

Compton took a 5-4 lead on a layup by Nia Ingram with 7:45 left in the first quarter, but Irvine Valley out-scored Compton, 11-1, the rest of the quarter.

Irvine Valley was up, 15-6, at the end of the period and built its lead to 34-16 at halftime.

The Lasers cruised from there and won by 22 points.

IVC improved its record to 5-3 overall.

Irvine Valley was paced by sophomore forward Kydell Pearson, who finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.

Freshman forward Kiara Warren had nine points and a team-high 14 rebounds. Freshman forward Taylor Hall came off the bench with nine points and 10 rebounds.

In all Irvine Valley out-rebounded Compton, 59-49.

Freshman guard Elizabeth Garcia chipped in eight points and freshman guard Chasity Paopao added five points and five rebounds in the win.

Compton, which saw its record fall to 5-5 overall, got 16 points from Jona'e Urabe.

Compton will take on Grossmont in a consolation game on Friday at 1 p.m.
