Irvine Valley Women's Basketball Tournament starts Thursday

The 12th Annual Irvine Valley Women's Basketball Tournament begins on Thursday and goes through Saturday in Hart Gymnasium.

The eight-team event has four games on both Thursday and Friday with three games on Saturday.

Irvine Valley, which has a record of 4-3 overall, opens the tournament on Thursday with a game against Compton at 6 p.m.

Saturday's lineup will feature the consolation title game at noon, the third-place contest at 2 p.m. and the championship at 4 p.m.

Long Beach City is the defending champion, having defeated Irvine Valley, 46-40, last season.

Irvine Valley won the title in 2014.

features a number of teams that were ranked in the CCCWBCA South Region Preseason Poll.

They include Long Beach City at No. 6, Riverside at No. 9 and Irvine Valley at No. 10.

El Camino, Orange Coast and Rio Hondo also received votes in the preseason poll.

And several teams are off to solid starts already this year.

Riverside has a record of 10-3 with a tournament title, Orange Coast is 6-3 with a tournament title and Long Beach City has a record of 5-4.

Meghan Peneueta is averaging 15.8 points and 3.8 assists a game for El Camino, Kamree Harrison is averaging 15.7 points and 3.9 assists and Khiya Mohamed is at 13.6 points and 9.6 rebounds a game for Grossmont, Aliyah Montiel is averaging 15.3 points and Destinee Garr is averaging 9.6 rebounds a game for Rio Hondo, Chiderah Uzowuru is averaging 14.0 points, 11.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists a game for Riverside.

Also, Aaleah Brown is averaging 14.3 points a game for Irvine Valley, Ayerjenee Jeanmard is averaging 13.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and 4.3 assists a game for Long Beach City and Chyann Pendergrass is averaging 6.4 assists a game for Orange Coast.
