Women's basketball team battles tough teams at Saddleback

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team went 1-2 in the Saddleback Tournament last week.

The two losses both came to teams ranked highly in the state.

The Lasers opened on Thursday with a 54-52 victory over Moorpark.

Sophomore forward Kydell Pearson led the way with 14 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Aaleah Brown finished with 13 points, and six rebounds, freshman guard Elizabeth Garcia added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists and freshman forward Kiara Warren chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds for IVC.

The Lasers then lost a tough game to East Los Angeles, 69-59, on Friday. East LA was ranked No. 3 in the Southern California preseason poll.

Irvine Valley, which is ranked No. 10 in So. Cal., led, 47-43, late in the third quarter, but couldn't hold on.

Freshman guard Serena Saba paced IVC with 15 points. Garcia had 13 points, 10 rebounds and four assists and Brown finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Pearson added eight points and five rebounds.

East LA stayed unbeaten on the season.

Irvine Valley finished out the tournament with a 66-56 loss to San Joaquin Delta in the third-place game on Saturday. Delta was ranked No. 5 in Northern California in the preseason poll.

The Lasers led, 53-52, after a layup by freshman forward Taylor Hall with 4:07 left in the game.

But Delta out-scored IVC, 14-3, the rest of the way.

Brown finished with 16 points, Pearson had 13 points and eight rebounds, Warren chipped in nine points and eight rebounds and Saba ended with seven points, four rebounds and five assists in 40 minutes of work.

Irvine Valley saw its record slip to 2-3 overall. IVC plays again next Wednesday in a nonconference game at Rio Hondo at 6 p.m.
