Women's basketball team receives seven commitments

Irvine Valley women's basketball coach Julie Hanks has received commitments from seven standout players for the 2016-17 season.

Elizabeth Garcia of Orangewood Academy, Gina Cordova of Esperanza High, Chasity Paopao and Destinee Thurman of El Camino High in Oceanside, Shayla Cohen of Canyon High, Destinee Reyes of Chaparral High of Temecula and Mary Dishioan of Marina High.

Garcia is a guard from Orangewood Academy, who averaged 9.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 3.0 steals per game last season.

She helped Orangewood Academy finish with a record of 22-8 overall. The team won three CIF playoff games and made the CIF Division 1AA semifinals.

Cordova is a forward from Esperanza, who averaged 7.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.1 steals a game last year.

She helped Esperanza finish with a 19-10 record overall last season. Esperanza won league titles in Cordova's junior and senior years and last year won two CIF playoff games.

Cordova was named her team's most improved player last year.

Paopao is a guard and Thurman is a guard/forward from El Camino. Paopao averaged 12.0 points per game and Thurman averaged 6.0 points per game last season.

Cohen is a guard/forward from Canyon. She helped Canyon finish with a record of 23-8 overall and win two CIF playoff games a season ago.

Cohen averaged 6.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.2 blocks per game for the Comanches last season.

Reyes is a post player from Chaparral. She averaged 4.0 points and 5.1 rebounds a game last season.

And Dishoian is a forward from Marina, who averaged 8.3 points per game last season.

Irvine Valley is coming off another solid season in 2015-16. The Lasers ended with a record of 23-8 overall and finished second in the Orange Empire Conference. IVC also made the Southern California Regional Playoff finals for the second year in a row.

Over the last two seasons, Irvine Valley has compiled an overall record of 50-12.
