Basketball player Tara Casey picked third team all-state

Irvine Valley sophomore women's basketball player Tara Casey was recently selected to the South Region Third Team All-State squad.

Casey had already been named first team all-Orange Empire Conference for the second year in a row.

Casey averaged 10.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 steals a game and made a team-high 53 three-pointers through the end of the regular season.

She averaged 11.9 points, 5.4 points, 2.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game in conference play.

Making South Region First Team All-State were Mt. San Jacinto's Britney Thomas, who was also named MVP, Mt. SAC's Gina Henderson, Santa Ana's Blaysen Varnadoe, Ventura's Aubri Smith, Mt. SAC's Jonae Vermillion and Santa Barbara City's Destinee King.

Second-team picks were College of the Canyons' Hannah Green, Long Beach City's Sopavy Seng, Chaffey's Chelsea Waddy-Blow, Mt. San Jacinto's Sarina Johnson, Mt. SAC's Alize Lofton and Los Angeles Valley's Adora Obi.

Third-team selections along with Casey were El Camino's Meghan Peneueta, Cypress' Erika Nilsen, Long Beach City's Guadalupe Cruz, Pasadena City's Judith Espinoza and Riverside's Jordan Lofton.

Casey helped Irvine Valley make its second straight trip to the Southern California Regional Playoff Finals this year. The Lasers ended the year with a record of 23-8 overall.

She finished her two-year career averaging 11.0 points per game, 668 points and making 109 three-pointers. She also averaged 4.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game.
