Six in a row for women's basketball team after win over OCC

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team was in control throughout in a 67-53 win over Orange Coast on Coaches vs. Cancer game night Friday at IVC.

The victory for Irvine Valley over OCC avenged an earlier loss to the Pirates in Orange Empire Conference play.

It was also the Lasers' sixth straight victory.

Irvine Valley stayed tied for first place in the conference standings with Cypress with the win.

The Lasers, ranked ninth in Southern California, improved their record to 19-6 overall and 7-2 in conference.

Orange Coast, which dropped its third straight contest, had its record fall to 13-12 overall and 4-5 in conference.

Irvine Valley lost to Orange Coast 56-50 on Jan. 13. The Lasers shot just 34.7 percent from the field as a team and were out-rebounded, 36-34, in that contest

Friday night was a different story.

IVC shot 46.7 percent (14 of 30), including 41.7 percent (5 of 12) to take control. The Lasers ended up shooting 42.9 percent for the game.

OCC led, 9-7, after a three-pointer by Michelle Wu with  2:26 left in the first quarter.

But Irvine Valley closed out the quarter on a 8-1 run behind a three-pointer by sophomore guard Tara Casey, a layup by freshman forward Kydell Pearson and another three-pointer by Casey.

The Lasers led, 15-10, at the end of the quarter and opened up the second period scoring the first 11 points to jump out to a 26-10 advantage.

Sophomore forward De'Jerre Scurry scored the first seven points alone. She made two jumpers and drilled a three-pointer.

A layup by sophomore forward Morgan Bryant gave IVC its 16-point cushion.

Irvine Valley led, 33-22, at the half and never looked back.

The Lasers were ahead by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter before Orange Coast cut the lead to 14 by the final buzzer.

Sophomore forward Kasey Smit and Casey led the way. Smit had 15 points, 14 rebounds and five steals, while Casey chipped in 14 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Scurry ended with nine points, Pearson had eight points, Bryant added eight points and sophomore guard Erika Mercado contributed seven points and five assists.

Irvine Valley finished up with 23 assists on its 27 made baskets.

Orange Coast, which shot 30.4 percent (17 of 56) for the game, got 11 points and four assists from Chyann Pendergrass, 10 points, four rebounds and four steals from Sami Little and nine points, five rebounds and five steals from Nunes.

Irvine Valley has a bye from action next Tuesday and then plays host to Saddleback next Thursday at 5 p.m. The game is part of the President's Cup Series between the two district rivals.
