Women's basketball team takes tourney title at Foothill

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team finished 2015 in style.

The Lasers won three straight games and won the Foothill Tournament Dec. 28-30.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 12-4 overall. The Lasers are ranked 12th in the state and sixth in Southern California this week. The Lasers moved up seven spots in the state and four places in So. Cal. since the last poll.

Irvine Valley crushed Los Medanos, 73-32, in the first game of the tourney behind 12 points each from sophomore guards Jordan Coleman and Tara Casey. Sophomore forward De'Jerre Scurry added 10 points and six rebounds in the win.

The Lasers then defeated host Foothill, 47-41, in a hard-fought game. Coleman had 11 points, freshman forward Kydell Pearson ended with 10 points and eight rebounds and Casey had eight points and four rebounds.

IVC wrapped up the tournament with a 61-49 victory over Sierra in the title game.

The game was tied, 30-30, at halftime, but IVC out-scored Sierra, 31-19, in the second half.

Coleman and sophomore point guard Erika Mercado had 10 points each with Mercado also chipping in five assists.

Scurry had nine points and freshman forward Kasey Smith contributed eight points and six rebounds.

Irvine Valley shot 41.2 percent from the field and limited Sierra to just 26.3 percent.

Pearson was named to the all-tournament team and Mercado was picked as the most valuable player of the event.

IVC gets back on the court on Jan. 6 at home to start Orange Empire Conference play. The Lasers will host Fullerton at 7 p.m.
