Women's basketball team starts strong in own tournament

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team opened its own tournament in fine fashion.

After a little bit of a slow start, the Lasers picked it up and defeated El Camino-Compton, 77-48, on Thursday night at IVC.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 7-2 overall.

The Lasers, who won the Irvine Valley Tournament a year ago, moved on to face Rio Hondo in a championship semifinal game on Friday at 7 p.m.

Rio Hondo defeated Grossmont, 56-47, to advance.

The other championship semifinal game will feature Long Beach City and Riverside at 5 p.m.

Long Beach City defeated Chaffey, 63-58, and Riverside topped El Camino, 61-47, earlier in the day.

Irvine Valley led, 17-12, after the first quarter over El Camino-Compton on Thursday night.

The Lasers then proceeded to out-score the Tartars, 23-9, in the second quarter and, 21-12, in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

IVC led, 40-21, at halftime and 61-33, after three quarters.

Irvine Valley shot 51.4 percent (35 of 67) for the game and out-rebounded El Camino-Compton, 44-25.

The Lasers also had 26 assists on their 35 made baskets.

Nine players scored for IVC in the contest, including three in double figures.

Freshman forward Kydell Pearson led the way with 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals. She made 8 of 13 shots from the floor.

Sophomore forward Morgan Bryant added 12 points and four rebounds and sophomore guard Jordan Coleman contributed 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Sophomore forward De'Jerre Scurry chipped in nine points and eight rebounds and sophomore guard Tara Casey and sophomore forward Patricia Tidwell-McClure each had seven points. Casey also finished with six rebounds, three assists and three blocks and Tidwell added four assists in the win for IVC.

Compton, which shot 34.8 percent (16 of 46) from the field, was paced by Jona'e Urabe, who had eight points. She went 6 of 12 from three-point range. Jazmine Samoa added 17 points and five rebounds.

Compton (0-9) plays Grossmont in a consolation game on Friday at 3 p.m.
