Women's basketball team wins by 53 in Gaucho Classic opener

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team won its third straight game of the season and did it in a big way on Thursday in the opening round of the Lady Gaucho Classic at Saddleback.

Irvine Valley crushed Cuesta, 81-28, to improve its record to 4-1 on the year.

The Lasers led, 21-4, after the first quarter and, 39-11, at halftime.

Irvine Valley led by as many as 56 points in the game before winning by 53.

IVC shot 46.2 percent (30 of 65) for the game and helped limit Cuesta to 19.6 percent (11 of 56) shooting.

The Lasers also out-rebounded Cuesta, 55-32.

Three players scored in double figures for IVC, but everyone contributed.

Sophomore guard Jordan Coleman and freshman guard Aaleah Brown each finished with 12 points. Brown got her 12 points in just 10 minutes.

Freshman forward Kasey Smit had 11 points and nine rebounds and freshman forward Kydell Pearson, freshman guard Jada Haynes and sophomore forward Patricia Tidwell-McClure each added eight points.

Tidwell-McClure also had 10 rebounds and Hawnes finished with eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Morgan Bryant chipped in six points and nine rebounds in the big IVC win.

Irvine Valley moved on to play San Joaquin Delta on Friday at 5 p.m. in a semifinal game of the tournament.

Delta was 86-42 winner over Southwestern in the first round of the event.

The tournament runs through Saturday with the championship game at 2 p.m.
