Turner, Hanks lead women's basketball team's OEC honors

Following a perfect 12-0 run in Orange Empire Conference competition, the Irvine Valley women's basketball team was rewarded with the top honors in the All-Orange Empire Conference selections that were announced on Tuesday.

Laser sophomore center Breanna Turner was named the Most Valuable Player while head coach Julie Hanks was named the Coach of the Year.

Turner averaged 15.6 points per game for Irvine Valley during OEC play to go along with 10.6 rebounds per game. She also shot 58.6 percent from the field during conference action.

She scored in double figures in 11 of the 12 games while recording highs of 22 points against Santa Ana and 17 rebounds against Cypress.

Coach Hanks received coaching honors as she led the Lasers to the first undefeated OEC season since Fullerton College accomplished the feat in back-to-back seasons from 2009-2011.

This was also Irvine Valley's first OEC title since the 1998-99 season and just the third in school history.

Three other Irvine Valley players earned honors.

Freshmen guards Jordan Coleman and Tara Casey were each selected first team all-conference and sophomore forward Conerie Brennan was chosen second team all-conference.

Coleman averaged 12.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.3 steals during conference play, while Casey averaged 9.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists a game in conference.

Coleman scored in double figures in seven conference games with a high of 22 points in a win against Riverside. Casey scored in double figures in six conference games with a high of 20 points in IVC's big win over Cypress to clinch the conference title.

Brennan averaged 6.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists for the Lasers on their way to perfect conference record.

Irvine Valley, which has a record of 25-3 overall and was ranked fifth in the state and third in Southern California at the end of the regular season, starts playoff action on Friday at home.

The Lasers, seeded third in the Southern California Regional Playoffs, host No. 14 Cerritos at 7 p.m.
