The Irvine Valley women's basketball team put together an 11-2 run midway through the second half and went on to post a 54-47 Orange Empire Conference victory over host Riverside City on Tuesday night at Riverside.
Irvine Valley stayed on top of the conference standings by itself with the win, improving its record to 22-3 overall and 9-0 in conference.
The Lasers, ranked sixth in the state and third in Southern California, will have a showdown with second-place Cypress next.
Irvine Valley hosts Cypress, which is ranked No. 14 in the state, on Thursday at 7 p.m. Cypress has a record of 8-1 in conference.
IVC was in a tight game for a while with Riverside on Tuesday.
The Lasers led by as many as 14 points in the first half before going into the break up, 27-20.
Riverside went on a 10-3 run to open the second half, however.
Irvine Valley reassumed the lead after Riverside sophomore guard Tierra Fuqua drained a three-pointer to forge a 30-30 tie with 14:36 to play.
During Irvine Valley's 11-2 run that broke the game open, sophomore center Breanna Turner, who had only three points by halftime, scored five points.
She finished with a team-high 14 points, seven rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals.
Freshman guards Tara Casey and Jordan Coleman had nine and eight points, respectively, for the Lasers. Coleman added five steals and Casey had three steals.
Sophomore guard Karli Kato chipped in eight points and freshman guard Erika Mercado had five points, five rebounds and four assists in the win.
Irvine Valley had 14 assists on its 19 made baskets in the game. And IVC's bench out-scored Riverside, 18-4.
For Riverside (16-10, 5-5), Fuqua finished with a game-high 16 points and seven rebounds.
Sophomore center Tori Mitchell added 15 points, pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds and had five blocked shots.
