Women's basketball team up to No. 2 in Southern California

After five straight wins overall and claiming a tournament title last weekend for the second week in a row, Irvine Valley's women's basketball team moved up in this week's CCCWBCA South Region Poll.

There was no state poll this week, but the South Region Poll was put out Monday night and the Lasers jumped two more spots.

IVC went from fourth in the region poll last week to No. 2 this week.

Irvine Valley, with a record of 9-1 overall, trails only undefeated Mt. San Antonio in the poll. Mt. SAC, which received all the first place votes, has a record of 11-0.

Rounding out the rest of the top 10 in the poll were Cypress, Palomar, Fullerton, East Los Angeles, El Camino, Mt. San Jacinto, College of the Canyons and Cuesta.

Irvine Valley followed up its Chaffey Tournament title two weekends ago by winning its own Irvine Valley Tournament last weekend.

The Lasers knocked off two other ranked teams in the event (El Camino and Pasadena City). IVC defeated Pasadena City, 84-66, in the championship game last Saturday behind a 27-point, 21 rebound performance by tourney MVP Breanna Turner.

Irvine Valley plays again this Thursday when it opens up competition in the Erin Tomlinson Coast Classic at Orange Coast College.

IVC plays No. 10 Cuesta in the first round on Thursday at 5 p.m.
