Women's basketball team routs West LA

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team won its second straight game and the Lasers did so convincingly.

Irvine Valley beat West Los Angeles, 74-35, Friday night at home.

The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 7-4 overall. West LA, which is coached by former UC Irvine head coach Colleen Matsuhara, fell to 0-9.

Irvine Valley scored the first 15 points in the contest and never looked back in what was the team's easiest victory in nearly a year.

The Lasers beat San Mateo, 82-31, Dec. 30, 2012.

Irvine Valley had four players score in double figures Friday night. Freshman point guard Kendall Peterson led the way with 18 points, five rebounds and three assists. She made 8 of 9 shots in the game.

Sophomore guard Kiara King contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and nine assists, sophomore forward Taylor Casey added 13 points and freshman forward Alexis Casillas chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.

IVC also got its third solid game in a row from freshman center Breanna Turner, who finished with eight points, 11 rebounds and three assists.

Freshman forward Conerie Brennan had six points and four rebounds and sophomore guard Jasmine Kennon closed out the team's scoring with four points in limited minutes.

Irvine Valley shot 52.3 percent (34 of 65) from the field for the game and 41.7 percent (5 of 12) from beyond the three-point line.

West LA shot just 22.8 percent (13 of 57) for the contest. The Lasers also out-rebounded the Wildcats, 51-30, and Irvine Valley had 23 assists in the contest.

Irvine Valley will play again next Wednesday when it takes part in the Orange Coast Tournament. The Lasers open the event against Southwestern from San Diego.
