Irvine Valley's women's basketball team won the opening game of its own tournament Thursday night, but just barely.
The Lasers scored with just seconds to play and then held on for a 44-42 victory over El Camino.
Irvine Valley advanced to the semifinals on Friday against Long Beach City, which took apart Imperial Valley, 91-37, in the final game of Thursday night.
Irvine Valley will meet Long Beach City, which is undefeated and the top-ranked team in the state at 7 p.m. on Friday. Long Beach City defeated Irvine Valley, 69-66, in a game earlier this season.
Other games on Friday will be El Camino-Compton against San Diego City at 1 p.m., El Camino vs. Imperial Valley at 3 p.m. and Rio Hondo vs. Pasadena City at 5 p.m.
Irvine Valley, ranked 20th in the state, trailed, 25-22, to El Camino at halftime and was down by as many as five points early in the second half.
IVC was down, 33-30, but then scored seven straight points, capped by a layup by freshman center Breanna Turner off a steal and assist by freshman forward Alexis Casillas to take a 37-33 advantage with 8:23 left in the game.
The Lasers held the lead until El Camino tied the game with under a minute to play.
Down, 42-40, El Camino's Shontalene Trudeau scored to tie it up at 42 with 23 seconds left.
Irvine Valley called a timeout and out of that timeout the Lasers set up a play that got the ball to Casillas.
She made a lay-up with just under eight seconds left to put IVC up, 44-42.
El Camino had one last shot, but Michelle Garrison missed a lay-up as time ran out and Irvine Valley held on.
Neither team shot well from the field in the contest. El Camino shot 25.4 percent (18 of 71) from the field and Irvine Valley was 27.1 percent (16 of 59).
Irvine Valley out-rebounded El Camino, 56-47, but the Lasers committed 22 turnovers.
IVC was also just 1 of 10 from behind the three-point line. El Camino was 2 of 16 from three-point range.
The Lasers, who improved their record to 5-3, were paced by sophomore guard Jasmine Kennon, who had 11 points. Casillas finished with nine points and 15 rebounds, while sophomore forward Taylor Casey added seven points and seven rebounds and freshman guard Jay Sneeden had six points and eight rebounds.
El Camino (5-3) got 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals from Tredeau, eight points each from Garrison and Fineone Prescott and 10 rebounds from Clarizzah Macatugal.
In other games on Thursday, Rio Hondo defeated El Camino-Compton, 64-28. The Roadrunners led, 43-15, at halftime.
Bianca Garcia was the star for Rio Hondo, finishing with 16 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and five steals. Klarissa Ayala added 14 points and six assists for Rio Hondo.
El Camino-Compton got nine points, 10 rebounds and four steals from Jessica Phillips.
Pasadena City, which is ranked seventh in the state, rolled in a 83-51 victory over San Diego City.
The Lancers got out to a big lead early and never looked back. Pasadena City was up, 43-20, at halftime.
Kaitlyn Parks had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Skai Thompson finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals and Bailey Williams chipped in 10 points for Pasadena City, which improved its record to 5-2.
San Diego City got 12 points, six rebounds and five blocks from Alex Warren, 10 points from Melanie San Nicolas and 10 rebounds from Maria Torres in defeat.
In the final game of the night, Long Beach City had no problem in beating Imperial Valley, 91-37.
Long Beach City scored the first 19 points of the game. Imperial Valley finally got on the board with a pair of free throws at the 13:41-mark of the first half.
The Vikings were up, 58-12, at halftime and held Imperial Valley to just three field goal makes in the opening half.
Long Beach City got contributions from all over with Abbey Goodsell scoring 18 points and coming up with four steals, Darshana Taafua finishing with 15 points, six rebounds and five steals, Antoinette Davis adding 14 points and six rebounds and Shakeena Benton contributing 11 points and five assists.
Long Beach City finished with 27 assists and 22 steals and Imperial Valley had 34 turnovers.
Imperial Valley got 11 points and seven rebounds from Ana Rodriguez and seven points and six rebounds from Dezzrah Van.
