Women's basketball team knocks off Sequoias

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team earned one of its best wins of the season on Monday, knocking off College of the Sequoias on the final day of the Sequoias Crossover event.

The Lasers went 2-0 in the four-team event, beating San Mateo, 74-46, on Sunday and then host Sequoias, 59-56, on Monday.

Sequoias was ranked seventh in the state when the newest CCCWBCA State Poll came out Monday evening.

Sequoias was also ranked third in the North Region Poll.

Monday's win improved Irvine Valley's record to 11-5 on the season, while Sequoias fell to 13-4 with the defeat.

Irvine Valley is ranked No. 19 for the second week in a row in the state poll. It moved up a spot from No. 11 to No. 10 in the South Region Poll.

In the win over Sequoias, Irvine Valley got 18 points and nine rebounds from freshman forward Alexis Casillas and 13 points, nine rebounds and six assists from sophomore guard Kiara King.

Sophomore guard Jasmine Kennon and freshman center Breanna Turner each contributed 10 points. Kennon also chipped in with four assists and five rebounds and Turner had seven rebounds and one block.

Irvine Valley trailed, 32-27, at halftime, but out-scored Sequoias, 32-24, in the second half.

The Lasers play again on Jan. 8 when then take on Cypress to open Orange Empire Conference play. IVC hosts the Chargers at 7:30 p.m.
