Former Lasers McCorkle and Wharton leading Dominguez Hills

Former Irvine Valley women's basketball players Shomari McCorkle and Amber Wharton helped the Cal State Dominguez Hills team win the CCAA Tournament last week.

Cal State Dominguez Hills, the third seed, defeated top-seeded Cal Poly Pomona in the final.

With the CCAA Championship, the Toros received the CCAA's automatic bid into the NCAA Division II West Regional.

Cal State Dominguez Hills was slated to open the eight-team tournament against Chico State on Friday at 5 p.m.

CSUDH is the No. 4 seed, while Chico State is No. 5.

In the CCAA championship game win for the Toros over Cal Poly Pomona, Wharton finished with 12 points, three assists and two steals, while McCorkle had two points, four rebounds and two steals.

The duo has helped Cal State Dominguez Hills to a record of 19-11 so far this season.

Wharton is averaging 9.3 points, while McCorkle averages 2.7 points and 4.4 rebounds. McCorkle has started 25 of 29 games. Wharton, who missed some time with injury, has started 16 of the 19 games she has played in.

Wharton and McCorkle were both all-Orange Empire Conference players at Irvine Valley the past two seasons. McCorkle was also a third-team all-state pick after 2012-13.

They helped Irvine Valley to a 21-11 record,  a second-place finish in conference and a trip to the Southern California Regional Playoffs quarterfinals last year.
