Women's basketball team crushes Fullerton on the road

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team continued its climb back up the Orange Empire Conference standings.

The Lasers won their second straight game and moved into a tie for third place with Cypress.

Irvine Valley defeated Fullerton, 72-46, at Fullerton on Thursday to improve its record to 17-10 overall and 6-5 in conference.

After beating Santa Ana at home on Tuesday, IVC played one of its best halves of the season to defeat Fullerton.

IVC was up, 41-14, at halftime.

Irvine Valley led, 12-8, with 12:49 left and then went on a 27-2 run.

Sophomore guard Jasmine Kennon capped the run with a jumper to give IVC a 39-10 lead with 4:18 left in the half.

IVC shot 56.2 percent (18 of 32) from the field and 44.4 percent (4 of 9) from three-point range in the opening half.

Irvine Valley had assists on 14 of its 18 made baskets and out-rebounded Fullerton, 21-8, in the opening half.

Sophomore forward Taylor Casey scored 15 points in the first half to lead IVC.

She finished with 21 points and five rebounds for the game.

Freshman center Breanna Turner (17 points and 17 rebounds) and freshman forward Alexis Casillas (10 points and 10 rebounds) each had double-doubles.

Kennon chipped in eight points, five rebounds and five assists and freshman forward Conerie Brennan had six points for the Lasers.

On the season, Casillas leads IVC, averaging 12.3 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. Casillas is first in the conference in rebounding. Casey averages 10.5 points and 6.0 rebounds, Kennon averages 8.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.3 steals, Turner is averaging 7.6 points and 5.9 rebounds and Kendall Peterson averages 5.7 points, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals. Turner is now fourth in the conference in field goal percentage at 47.5 percent. IVC is shooting 41.1 percent from the field as a team and averages 62.9 points per game.

Irvine Valley plays its final conference game on Wednesday at home against Riverside.

The Lasers have their second bye in the conference schedule next Friday.

Southern California Playoff brackets will be announced Monday, Feb. 24.
