Women's basketball team wins third straight

​Irvine Valley's women's basketball team ended the first round of Orange Empire Conference play on a high note.

After starting conference 0-3, Irvine Valley won its third straight game, beating Riverside, 60-51, at Riverside on Friday night.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 14-8 overall and 3-3 in conference with the win.

The Lasers have a bye in the conference schedule on Wednesday and start the second half of conference at Cypress Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Cypress and Saddleback are tied for first in conference with records of 4-1. Orange Coast is in third at 3-2 and Irvine Valley is fourth at 3-3.

Sophomore guard Jasmine Kennon tossed in a team-high 14 points and added seven rebounds for the Lasers in the win over Riverside.

Freshman forward Conerie Brennan and freshman center Breanna Turner each added 10 points, freshman forward Alexis Casillas chipped in with nine points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and freshman guard Kendall Peterson finished with nine points and four assists for the Lasers. Turner also had eight rebounds and three steals in the contest.

Irvine Valley out-rebounded Riverside, 45-36, and had 15 assists on its 19 made baskets.

The Lasers played a strong second half to earn the victory.

Irvine Valley trailed, 28-26, at halftime, but went on a 14-5 lead over the first 6:20 of the second half to take control.

Irvine Valley built a 51-41 cushion with 6:42 left and kept the Tigers at bay.

Riverside (6-13, 1-4) was paced by Tierra Fuqua with 15 points.
