History

The Irvine Valley men's volleyball team began as a club squad in 1991 with Tom Pestolesi as the first coach.

Just two years later, Irvine Valley captured a state tournament title. IVC's first state championship team consisted of Jim Butchko, Zolti Czanyi, Randy Gilbert, Brian Godshaw, Ross Jacobsen, Kevin Karg, Jason Mikartz, Billy Nguyen, Eric Olsen, John Roche, Chris Seale and Martin Wagner.

IVC is very proud of the fact that Brian Godshaw (Loyola Marymount), Billy Nguyen (University of the Pacific), Martin Wagner (Long Beach State) and Eric Olsen (George Mason) went on to compete in Division I college volleyball and obtain their degrees. Wagner was an All-American at Long Beach State.

Irvine Valley reached the state tournament again in 2005, falling in the semifinal round to eventual champion Moorpark.

The Lasers made a return trip to the state tournament in 2006 after winning their second ever Orange Empire Conference title. Irvine Valley, which hosted the 2006 state event lost to Los Angeles Pierce in the semifinal round.

Irvine Valley won back-to-back conference and state titles in 2007 and 2008 behind state MVP Tyler Rex in 2007 and state MVP Peter Johnson in 2008.

The Lasers were back in the state title tournament in 2010, but fell to Moorpark in the semifinals.

But the 2011 Lasers won it all again, upsetting Orange Coast in the semifinals in four games and then Grossmont in the final to earn the program's fourth state title. Brandon Directo was named state tournament MVP.

Irvine Valley made the state tournament again in 2012, but lost to eventual champion Long Beach City in the semifinals.

Irvine Valley returned to the state tournament in 2014, falling to Orange Coast in the semifinals. Cole Murray was named to the state all-tournament team for IVC.
