Men's volleyball team runs into solid San Diego Mesa squad

The Irvine Valley men's volleyball team, ranked No. 6 in the state, lost in straight sets to No. 2 San Diego Mesa squad on Friday night at home.

Irvine Valley's record went to 7-3 overall, while Mesa improved to 9-1.

The Lasers had a hard time stopping the Olympian attack.

San Diego Mesa had a .404 hitting percentage on the night, led by future UC Irvine player Trevor Clark.

Clark had 30 kills with only two errors on 52 attempts. He hit .538 and added eight digs for the Olympians.

San Diego Mesa also finished with 56 assists as a team.

Irvine Valley was within two points late in each frame and hit .281 as a team, but it wasn't enough against Mesa.

The Lasers were paced by freshman opposite Travis Kaufman, who ended with 11 kills and hit .360.

Freshman setter Bryce Nohava had 25 assists and freshman middle blocker Joshua Damianopoulos and freshman outside hitter Jack McGrew each added six kills.

McGrew and freshman libero Cage Gonzalez each contributed six digs.

Irvine Valley plays again next Wednesday at Palomar at 6 p.m.
