No. 3 men's volleyball team drops five-set matches to top squads

Irvine Valley's men's volleybal team, ranked tied for third in the state this past week, dropped two tough matches this past week.

The Lasers went on the road and battled the top team in the state and two, time-defending state champion Orange Coast on Wednesday on the road.

IVC fell, 25-23, 21-25, 23-25, 25-15, 15-7 to the Pirates.

The Lasers ended up hitting .122 on the night. OCC was just better at .244.

Sophomore outside hitter Damon Kooiman ended with nine kills and sophomore outside hitter Matt Reid had eight kills for IVC.

Freshman setter and opposite Grant Dvorak had six kills and 25 assists and freshman middle blocker Giovanni Flowers chipped in six kills and four blocks for Irvine Valley.

The Lasers turned around and played another one of the best teams in the state on Friday at home.

Irvine Valley won the first two sets, but ended up falling to Golden West, 24-26, 23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 15-12.

The Lasers hit .135 as a team (29-49-148) 

Reid and Dvorak each finished with 11 kills. Dvorak also had 25 assists on the night. And freshman libero Domenic Marquez conributed 12 digs.

Irvine Valley plays again on Wednesday in a conference match at Santiago Canyon at 6 p.m.
