Top-ranked men's volleyball team has easy time at Palomar

The Irvine Valley men's volleyball team won its fourth match in a row and improved its record to 9-1 overall with a sweep at Palomar Wednesday night.

It was the sixth three-set victory of the season for the Lasers.

But the fun starts next Wednesday when IVC, tied for first in the state in the latest coaches state poll, hosts reigning state champion and No. 3 this year Orange Coast at 6 p.m.

Irvine Valley had 10 players record a kill in its 25-11, 25-14, 25-17 win at Palomar on Wednesday, led by standout sophomore opposite Demetre Gossett with nine kills.

He hit .471 on the night and added five digs.

As a team, Irvine Valley had a hitting percentage of .444.

Freshman outside hitter Damon Kooiman chipped in six kills, freshman setter Kaina Alvarez ran the offense with 19 assists and freshman outside hitter Zach McEntire (11 digs) and sophomore libero Adam Schulte (10 digs) kept IVC alive in points throughout.

Sophomore middle blocker Julio Gutierrez was big at the net, finishing with four blocks.
