No. 1 men's volleyball team sweeps its fifth opponent in 2023

The Irvine Valley men's volleyball team earned its fifth sweep of the season and had its quickest played match of the year.

The Lasers dispatched Grossmont, 25-17, 25-19, 25-14, in just over an hour at home on Friday night.

IVC, ranked No. 1 in the state, improved its record to 8-1 overall. Irvine Valley is on a three-match win streak.

Coach Rory Jones was able to use most of his roster in the match, which the Lasers controlled in each and every set.

Eight different players recorded kills for the Lasers.

Sophomore star opposite Demetre Gossett finished with six kills and four aces, sophomore middle blocker Julio Gutierrez had five kills and hit .500 and freshman setter Kaina Alvarez ran the offense with 14 assists and added two aces.

Freshman outside hitter Damon Kooiman recorded a team-high five digs for IVC.

The Lasers have one more contest before starting Orange Empire Conference play in two weeks against another top team in the state - Orange Coast.

Irvine Valley travels to Palomar next Wednesday at 6 p.m.
