Men's volleyball team splits in tough matches at OCC quad event

The Irvine Valley men's volleyball team lost a tough one in its first match of the Orange Coast quad event on Saturday, but the Lasers bounced back with a victory later in the day over El Camino.

The event included some of the top teams in the state.

Both of Irvine Valley's matches went five sets.

In the opener against Long Beach City, Irvine Valley won the first two sets, but then dropped the next three. The Vikings won the third set, 16-14.

Long Beach earned the victory, 23-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22, 16-14.

Irvine Valley was led by freshman opposite Caden Perkins with nine kills and six blocks. Freshman outside hitter Colline Chillingworth added six kills and six blocks and freshman outside hitter JT Demure had five kills, seven digs and six blocks.

Freshman libero Adam Schulte chipped in nine digs and freshman setter Andrew Perez finished with 39 assists, eight digs and four blocks.

But IVC hit just .220 as a team in the match.

The Lasers turned around and played El Camino later in the day.

And Irvine Valley pulled out a 21-25, 25-15, 25-21, 23-25, 15-9 win.

The Lasers hit .282 as a team, led by freshman outside hitter Josh Beymer, who hit. 538 with nine kills and 10 blocks.

Chillingworth added nine kills, Demure had seven kills and Perez ran the offense with 42 assists.

Irvine Valley plays again in a nonconference match at Moorpark on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
