Men's volleyball team meets OCC in state semifinals Thursday

Irvine Valley's men's volleyball team gets its third crack at Orange Coast this season as the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships get underway on Thursday night at Fullerton College.

Irvine Valley, seeded fourth, takes on undefeated and top-seeded Orange Coast in one semifinal at 7 p.m.

No. 2 El Camino takes on No. 3 Long Beach City in the other semifinal at 5 p.m.

Irvine Valley held off No. 5 Moorpark, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 26-24, last Friday night at home to move on to semifinals.

IVC was paced by freshman outside hitter Demetre Gossett, who finished with 12 kills and two aces. Freshman outside hitter Declan Holder and freshman middle blocker Tristan Belsby each added 10 kills, sophomore outside hitter Sean Carroll had eight kills and two aces and freshman middle blocker Grant Marocchi finished with six kills and five block assists.

Freshman setter Jimi Wilson ran the offense with 44 assists and contributed five digs and two block assists.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 14-7 on the year.

Orange Coast has a record of 22-0. It rolled over No. 8 Santa Barbara City, 25-15, 25-17, 25-12, last Friday to advance.

Kyle McCauley had six kills and five aces, while Garrett Halsey added five kills to lead the Pirates.

Aiden Wolf-Nielsen ripped four kills to go along with five total blocks and two aces, while Jake Loudenback, Clark Steele each had three kills and three blocks.

Orange Coast defeated Irvine Valley, 25-16, 25-20, 25-18 on March 13 at Irvine Valley and then, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21, on March 29 at Orange Coast.

For the Lasers, Carroll leads the offense with 176 kills, followed by Gossett (165 kills), Marocchi (141 kills), Holder (123 kills) and Belsby (120 kills). Wilson has contributed 192 assists after taking over the setter role full time late in the year.

McCauley leads OCC with a team-best 175 kills. Jack Flynn (128 kills), Steele (100 kills), Halsey (93 kills) and Wolf-Nielsen (91 kills) provide several options to Pirate setters Enzo Boggio (390 assists) and Jordan Rodriguez (247 assists).

The state championship match will be on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Fullerton.
