Men's volleyball team hosts Moorpark in playoff opener Friday

The Irvine Valley men's volleybll team earned the No. 4 seed and will host a first-round match in the California Community College Athletic Association State Playoffs on Friday.

The Lasers will take on No. 5 Moorpark at 6 p.m.

It is the first meeting between the two schools this year.

Moorpark, seeded fifth, has a record of 10-7 overall and went 6-6 in the Western State Conference.

It is the team's first trip to the state playoffs since 2012. A competitive Western State Conference helped Moorpark earn a top-five seed.

The Raiders finished fourth in the WSC. Two of the top three seeds in the state playoff bracket come from the Western State Conference: No. 2 El Camino and No. 3 Long Beach City.

Santa Barbara City also made the playoffs from the conference. SBCC is the No. 8 seed.

Moorpark defeated Santa Barbara City in five sets and nearly knocked off El Camino, falling in five tough sets this year.

Moorpark finished the regular season with a 25-19, 25-15, 26-28, 25-22 at LA Pierce last Friday.

Jordan Moses ended with 17 kills, Gurpreet Ghotra had 11 kills and Dylan Haskell contributed nine kills. Steven Weese ran the offense with 45 assists.

On the year, Moses is averaging 2.93 kills and 1.20 digs per set. Ryan Horan averages 2.08 kills, Haskell averages 1.78 kills, and Ghotra is averaging 1.58 kills per set, while Weese averages 9.24 assists and 1.30 digs per set.

Irvine Valley had a disappointing loss to Santiago Canyon at home last Friday, but still finished with a record of 13-7 overall.

The Lasers placed second in the Orange Empire Conference with a mark of 5-3.

IVC hit just .157 in the contest. Freshman outside hitter Demetre Gossett had a solid match with 13 kills. He hit .391. Sophomore outside hitter Sean Carroll added seven kills and five digs, freshman middle blocker Grant Marocchi had five kills and three blocks and freshman setter Jimi Wilson contributed 31 assists and three blocks.

Three teams from the OEC moved advanced to the postseason: No. 1 Orange Coast, Irvine Valley and No. 6 Santiago Canyon.

On the year, Carroll is averaging 2.75 kills per set, Gossett averages 2.47 kills and 0.94 aces, Marocchi averages 2.11 kills, is hitting .444 and is averaging 1.09 blocks, freshman outside hitter Declan Holder averages 1.79 kills and freshman middle blocker Tristan Belsby is averaging 1.69 kills and 0.71 blocks per set.
